Actor's Objective: What it is and how to use It

What is an actor's objective?

Basically, it can be broken into three parts which are as follows -

Actor's Objective: It is what the character most wants in the scene.

Actor's Intention: This explains what the character wants in the scene. Knowing the reason for the scene makes the performance better with an objective and critical approach.

Actor's Action: It is about what the character physically does to give the on-screen characters a three-dimensional look.

How Objective, Intention, and Action are interdependent?

It is necessary for the actor to understand -

Who am I? Your character's past influences how they behave.

Where am I? The character's actions may (or may not) be influenced by the immediate environment.

When was that? The performance's outcome may also depend on the day, hour, season, and year (night vs. morning, for instance).

What do I desire? Without a clear desire or purpose, there would be no value in watching the action because nothing would happen. This is your character's objective.

What makes me want it? This is the actor's intention or the reason they are pursuing their goals. It's challenging to perform naturally and realistically in the absence of a motive.

How can I obtain it? This is the action, which is typically mentioned in the script.

It will be simpler for you to deliver an engaging and realistic performance the more certain you are of your responses to each of the aforementioned questions. Before casting directors will take you seriously in the audition room, you must make certain "choices."

Moment-to-Moment Objective vs. Super Objective

The majority of characters don't have a single goal. Like people in real life, realistic, multidimensional characters have a variety of goals.

• Super Objective (theatre definition): The character's overarching goal for the narrative is known as the Super Objective in theatre. It usually remains unchanged until completed (or until the character gives up). Consider it the character's overarching objective.

• Moment-to-Moment Objective: A character's Moment-to-Moment Objective may alter depending on the events taking place in the scene.

Even if the words are the same, changing the objectives can dramatically alter how a scene is played out. What if you said, "I love you so much"? If your goal is to make the other person feel loved and cared for, you would phrase the words in a particular way. However, you would pronounce the words very differently if your goal was to make the other person feel foolish, perhaps even while you were speaking.

Internalizing the Objective

Simply repeat your sentence aloud to yourself 10–20 times in various tonalities to let your Objective, Intention, and Actions get internalised in your subconscious. Finding your character's goal is crucial, but developing your acting career involves much more than this.

Because of this, "strategic thinking" is one of the most valuable skills an actor can have.
